As a lifelong student, the latest venture for my yoga training was how to teach children's yoga. I have always thought that the practice of yoga was beneficial to adults, and even teenagers. I started mentoring a 17 year old several months ago who has struggled with their mental health. When I would visit with him, I often taught him a new pose or breathing technique to try. "Breathing is magical," I tell him.
Stopping to mindfully take a deep breathe before reacting to something can help you choose a different reaction. It gives a person space to think "Will this reaction help me, or hurt me?" He noticed the benefit in that pause from the first time he tried it.
What if kids were taught to take that pause from a very early age. Children today are so busy moving from the school day to an extra curricular activity, homework, and don't forget the endless scrolling and stimulation on their phones. Yoga can provide them with an activity that gives them space to explore, get curious, and have fun. Children's yoga is a wonderful practice that can bring numerous benefits to young minds and bodies.
